AN IMPORTANT UPDATE ON COVID-19

In these uncertain times it’s important we all share a common purpose.

The Prime Minister has described the Covid-19 pandemic as “our greatest challenge in a century”. It’s a challenge I firmly believe our nation can rise to.

The rapid change and volume of information can feel confusing, but the Government’s goals are simple and straightforward:

  • to stop the spread and “flatten the curve” by following expert health advice;
  • to support those individuals and businesses that are impacted by those efforts;
  • and to ensure the best quality healthcare for those who contract the virus.

As Industry Minister I’ve been engaging Australian manufacturers to ramp up production of essential products we need, including hand sanitiser, surgical masks and gowns and ventilators.  It’s about ensuring we’re well prepared for the months ahead.

The many offers from businesses to repurpose their production are indicative of Aussie ingenuity and our fighting spirit. The case of MedCon in regional Shepparton is a great example of what can be achieved, and I look forward to sharing other examples as we finalise production plans over the next few weeks.

The Tech Sector has also stepped up – offering free online services and support for businesses whose employees are now working from home.

We are all in this together. But our hearts go out to those in our community who have lost their job or had their businesses forced to close or contract as a result of this crisis. This hardship and loss must strengthen our resolve to do the right thing.

Please follow the advice from our Chief Medical Officers, maintain good hygiene and social distancing, and limit time spent away from your home to protect yourself and those in our community who are most at risk.

It’s also important to arm yourself with the facts - visit the australia.gov.au website, where you'll find information and links covering a wide range of COVID-19 advice, restrictions and assistance.

Finally, I encourage you to pick up the phone and check in with loved ones, particularly those who are living alone. Caring for others and lifting each other’s spirits will help us get through this.

Remember – Australia is up to this challenge and life will return to normal on the other side of this crisis. In the meantime, I’ll keep you up to date.

Stay safe,
