Message from National NOW President Christian F. Nunes
February 23, 2024
Greetings Feminists,
Ending racism is one of NOW’s six core issues. We were founded alongside the civil rights movement, dedicated to working at the grassroots and national levels, on policy and advocacy, to advance racial justice.
This month, we are celebrating the release of the 2024 Pauli Murray Quarter, honoring Dr. Pauli Murray, one of the co-founders of NOW who co-authored NOW’s original Statement of Purpose—one of the first declarations of intersectionality as a social justice goal.
“We realize that women’s problems are linked to many broader questions of social justice; their solution will require concerted action by many groups,” it reads.
“Therefore, convinced that human rights for all are indivisible, we expect to give active support to the common cause of equal rights for all those who suffer discrimination and deprivation, and we call upon other organizations committed to such goals to support our efforts toward equality for women.”
More than fifty years later, NOW is still supporting this urgent cause, every day, with your help. Our priorities for racial justice include curbing voter suppression and strengthening voting rights; supporting BIPOC candidates; policing reform and police brutality; and more enforcement of hate crimes.
As champions of equal opportunities in all areas, including employment, education, and reproductive rights, we recognize that racial justice is a feminist issue and that to achieve equality, our activism must be anti-racist.
In solidarity,
Christian
