Legislative Update

This session's main focus so far has been to correct some major mistakes from last session. Republicans have been trying since August to pass a fix for the flawed school resource officer bill passed last year that resulted in dozens of school districts pulling SROs from their schools. After months of work from Republicans and law enforcement, it seems we finally have a compromise bill that can pass and get our SROs back in schools.

Democrats broke a promise this week by voting down an amendment that would have fixed an error from last year's tax bill that will cost Minnesota businesses close to $15 million if left undone. Unfortunately, even though both tax chairs from the House and Senate pledged in writing to fix the mistake at the "earliest possible opportunity", they voted down a fix during a debate on a bill that fixed the other three of the four mistakes from the bill. It is disappointing that the DFL is leaving Minnesota businesses in the lurch in the height of tax season, and I will continue advocating for a fix as soon as possible.

This week has made it very clear how important it is to support our police and other first responders. On Sunday, two Burnsville police officers and a firefighter/paramedic were killed in the line of duty trying to help seven children being held hostage. This tragedy has reverberated through the entire state, especially our men and women in law enforcement who put themselves in dangerous situations every day to keep our communities safe. There unfortunately are always scams looking to take advantage of the generosity shown during tragedy, so if you'd like to support the families of the first responders killed on Sunday, you can find safe ways to do that on the City of Burnsville website [ [link removed] ].

I had many different groups come to meet and share their perspectives this week, and had great conversations with them about their priorities. It is great to welcome back normal citizen participation here at the Capitol.
