Capitol Lake sediment survey and nearby drilling back on next week
Left: 2020 study on Capitol Lake | Right: Drilling begins November 2023
Where: On and around Capitol Lake, and along Deschutes Parkway near the 5th Avenue Dam.
What's happening: Survey of underwater sediment in Capitol Lake, called a bathymetric survey. The survey was originally scheduled for November 2023 but had to be postponed due to seasonal underwater growth.
Crews will also continue a geotechnical survey of the land near the 5th Avenue Dam that requires drilling into the ground to collect samples.
Impact: Small, motored boats will be visible on Capitol Lake.
Large machinery, trucks, and crews will be visible near the 5th Avenue Dam, and visitors can expect loud noise from the drilling. A portion of the pedestrian walking path will be closed, and pedestrians should follow the marked detour.
When: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekdays, beginning Monday, Feb. 26 through Tuesday, March 5.
Why: As part of the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Project, DES is conducting fieldwork to provide information on the depth and shape of the underwater landscape including sediment deposits, and condition and makeup of the ground surrounding Capitol Lake. This information will support initial phases of bridge, roadway, and boardwalk development.
All work is weather dependent. The Washington State Department of Enterprise Services has contracted with FLOYD | SNIDER of Seattle, Washington for this effort.
