The U.S. House just passed a bipartisan tax plan that includes an expansion of the Child Tax Credit for about 80% of families with low incomes who currently don't receive the full credit. If it's enacted into law, this plan would provide relief to millions. Now, it's up to the Senate to act.

When Congress first passed an expansion of the Child Tax Credit in March 2021 (due to the leadership of Democrats and President Biden), child poverty in America was cut in half . Unfortunately, Since Congress failed to prevent the expiration of those programs in 2022, the child poverty rate in the U.S. has more than doubled . 12.4% of American children were living below the poverty line in 2022, back to pre-pandemic levels.

Republicans in Congress have failed to extend the federal child tax credit, the protection that brought nearly 4 million American children out of poverty. This new expansion of the program could benefit up to 16 million children.

When the expanded child tax credit was in effect, families used the money on basic necessities like food, housing, utilities, and emergency savings. For the first time in our country’s history, child poverty dropped below 10%. Only 1 in 20 children were living in poverty, a historic low.
