There's no mincing words: not only has this decision upended fertility care in Alabama. It also represents the weaponization of the judicial system to impose a conservative ideology that seeks to stop you from deciding your destiny, deny you your equality under the law, and shut down decades of progress for gender justice.
And while we have been fighting to prevent this type of attack, knowing this could happen, we’re still aghast that we’ve reached this breaking point and are witnessing the devastating consequences in real-time.

This ruling is part of extremists’ effort to codify the concept of “fetal personhood” in the law. Their ultimate aim is to get the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that fetuses have rights under the U.S. Constitution, which could result in nationwide bans on abortion, as well as impact contraceptive and fertility care. Exactly what we saw begin to happen in Alabama on Monday.

If that were to happen, no state could protect abortion access or other reproductive health care caught in personhood’s traps.
