Adults on Pre-exposure Prophylaxis have Faster Clearance of Anti-HIV Monoclonal Antibody VRC01

Researchers are developing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to prevent HIV, which can be used alongside existing oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in clinical trials. In a study of 48 US participants who received the HIV-1 mAb VRC01 and stayed HIV-free, a further analysis showed that in PrEP users, VRC01 was cleared from the body 0.08 L/day faster and had a 14% lower efficacy in preventing HIV-1 compared to non-PrEP users.
