John,
We’ve given ourselves three budget extensions in the last six months.
The current extension runs out very soon and the budget still isn’t done.
BUT we are making progress. Out of public view, pieces are being put together.
Two big questions:
First, will we finish in time to avoid another extension? It’s possible, but only if the Speaker breaks his pledge to only vote on single-issue bills. The budget is technically 12 separate bills and to beat the deadline he’s going to have to combine a bunch of them.
Second, given that his right-flank has already stated their objection to any budget that can actually pass, when the Speaker ultimately has to go around his right-flank to get the votes he needs to pass a budget, what will their level of rage be?
The answer to that question has profound implications for Ukraine and the southern border.
Here’s why:
The budget, Ukraine, and the southern border are three issues the Speaker can’t address without provoking a fight with his right-flank, simply because doing anything on any of those issues will require some degree of bipartisan compromise and his right-flank won’t allow that.
Of those three, he definitely values getting a budget the most, so that’s where he’s most likely to spend whatever political capital he has remaining with his right-flank.
If we pass a budget and their rage is a full 10 out of 10, he could conclude that he doesn’t have enough political capital left to do Ukraine or the border.
His right-flank knows this, so my sense is they will be as performative as possible with their rage when we actually pass a budget. They’ll want to scare the Speaker into thinking he’s got no more margin for error with them and essentially halt the legislative process for everything else.
Setting that aside, my genuine sense is there is still a strong bipartisan majority that is ready to pass legislation for Ukraine and the southern border. Over the next few weeks, I expect to be able to report back to you on that legislative process.
But it’s important to know that the ultimate question won’t be whether there are bills with strong bipartisan support - that’s actually the easy part.
The question is going to be whether the Speaker is willing to let those bills come to a vote. And despite what he’ll say publicly, my strong sense is that his decision is going to have far more to do with internal party politics than anything related to policy.
Campaign update - a mass deception operation unfolds
Last week, I told you that a new super PAC had sprung up and was spending heavily against us in the primary.
Well, things have become more serious.
Turns out that this super PAC is being funded by the other party - and it’s on track to spend about $1m against us in our primary.
Just for a sense of scale, my opponent in this primary raised about $40,000.
As of now, the other party has spent $700,000 on TV, mail, radio, texting, the works - all on behalf of my opponent. Looks like there’s more to come.
That is a very expensive deception operation.
Why are they doing it?
Evidently, they believe it’s worth it for them to spend a million dollars to try and beat me in the primary so they don’t have to run against me in the general election.
And because of the Citizens United ruling about 15 years ago, it’s totally legal.
I’m respectfully requesting your help. Your support is the most powerful lever we have to pull right now. It will let us get on the air to combat the onslaught of advertising we’re facing, and that’s really important.
