LGBTQ+ families deserve the right to marriage. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has signed a bill allowing public officials to decline to perform marriages based on their "conscience or religious beliefs." This action sets a dangerous precedent that allows for marriage licenses to be refused for queer and trans couples based on individual prejudices, perpetuating decades-long discrimination and sending us backwards.
Public officials should not turn anyone away who have a valid marriage license, and it is necessary that we take a stand.
