Supporter,

As I write, Congress has finally passed a $2 trillion economic stimulus package—the largest in history—to address the COVID-19 crisis.

Tens of thousands of Sierra Club supporters like you rose up and were able to get some big wins: Expanded unemployment benefits. Emergency loans to small businesses who keep their workers. Billions in aid to hospitals and healthcare. $25 billion to support public transit. $900 million to help lower-income households heat and cool their homes. Increased transparency and accountability for funds to support industry and states.

And we blocked some bad stuff: No $3 billion in direct payouts to big oil to buy up cheap crude. No “secret bailout” provision that would allow payments to corporations to be concealed for 6 months.

But what comes next means everything. We need to make sure the next recovery package supports people and businesses hardest hit by this crisis—not profits for fossil fuel companies—while prioritizing investments in our clean energy future. Will you help us fight for our planet and people with an emergency gift now?

Please become a monthly donor to the Sierra Club now. Help us engage our allies on Capitol Hill and mobilize our grassroots community to put the health, safety and well-being of people at the forefront of ongoing relief efforts.

Of course, there’s a well-founded concern that the Trump administration will use this moment, while the nation’s attention is rightly focused on the global pandemic, to push through some of their other toxic agenda items, like:

  • Selling access to lands adjacent to the Grand Canyon to allow uranium mining.

  • Reducing protections for migratory birds.

  • Rolling back standards to reduce mercury and other toxic air pollution from power plants.
We’re watching the Trump administration like hawks—for both how they handle the COVID-19 crisis and how they use the pandemic to sidestep public opinion and thwart the judicial process, all to line their Big Energy donors’ pockets. But we can’t track the administration, advocate on Capitol Hill and mobilize our grassroots supporters without your help now.

PLEASE, rush your monthly donation now. Help us rally pro-environment lawmakers in advance of the next relief package while also advocating in the courts and the grassroots for vulnerable communities, wildlife and public lands.

This is an unprecedented time for our country and our people. We know you’re counting on the Sierra Club to keep up the fight against climate change while pushing for a just and equitable recovery from this crisis. We’ve got this—because we’ve got you. Thank you for your support and vigilance again today.

With determination,

Michael Brune
