Are you coming into town for #IlluminateOldham this Saturday?
The fun begins on Saturday 24 February from 6pm with the annual illuminated Parade from the Oldham Civic Centre to the Old Town Hall. Here is everything you need to know…
See hundreds of community-made lanterns, galloping horses, flying birds and a giant illuminated octopus that will be sure to light up the High Street.
Look out for illuminated puppets, dancers and drummers from Global Grooves, alongside groups from across Oldham as they create a joyous explosion of colour, music and creativity.
From 6pm until 9pm, explore the 10 light artworks at various locations across the town centre - all you need to do is grab a brochure and follow the trail.
Don’t miss the activities at Gallery Oldham and Oldham Library throughout the night:
Life with the Wave by Interplay National Sensory Theatre: Experience a playful underwater journey in an illuminated dome. Shows at 6:30 and 7:30pm.
There will also be live music from Illuminate Parade Bands and a pop-up cafe where you can grab a bite to eat.
At 8pm, head over to the Old Town Hall as it transforms with vivid projection mapping, music and storytelling to bring the Grade 2 listed building to life with the colours of nature.
Plus, much more!

Helping improve people's lives closer to home
Residents in Oldham are getting help to cope with mental health, housing issues, and money matters closer to home thanks to a new initiative from Oldham Council and its partners.
The authority’s Residents’ First pledge means staff from Tameside, Oldham and Glossop (TOG) MIND, Citizen’s Advice Bureau and the council will be on hand to help at buildings across the borough to improve the lives of local people.
Offering support and services closer to home runs parallel to the council’s push to provide services digitally with many services available to access online with the council and partner websites.
Support is now available at Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, Neon Community Centre and continues at Access Oldham in the town centre, following on from the success of Failsworth Town Hall in 2023. Staff are also on hand in each library and Access Oldham customer support centre, to help connect you with support and services.

Don’t bin it, join the Donate IT Oldham campaign
Local people who are struggling to access much needed digital services could benefit from a new scheme to boost digital inclusion across the borough.
The Donate IT Oldham campaign aims to help bridge the digital gap for the most vulnerable residents by providing refurbished devices such as used laptops, smartphones, and tablets that businesses and members of the public no longer need.
The campaign has been launched by Oldham Council, in partnership with refurbishment provider, Tameside Community Computers (TCC), with the aim to collect over 500 unwanted devices between January 2024 and January 2025. Residents can donate unwanted devices across all of Oldham Council’s libraries.
Almost 40% of Oldham residents who responded to the Greater Manchester Residents' Survey in 2023 said they, or someone they lived with, experienced some form of digital inclusion issues, which can include struggling to access online learning, apply for jobs, and attend virtual classes because they lack suitable digital devices and internet connections at home.

Sharon and Bev break stereotypes by celebrating 11 years of fostering
Oldham Council is encouraging LGBTQ+ individuals to explore the opportunities and rewards of fostering during National LGBT+ History Month.
With National LGBT+ History Month in February 2024, Oldham Council is inviting everyone to consider this meaningful and rewarding experience.
Sharon and Bev are a fantastic LGBTQ+ couple, who have been fostering with Oldham Council for an amazing 11 years. They are breaking myths and showing us all that love and acceptance matter most.
Fostering is about giving children a loving home, and it doesn't care about your sexuality, gender, race, or beliefs. The assessment process checks if you can provide a safe and loving home, giving everyone a fair chance.
Oldham Council wants everyone to know that LGBTQ+ people often have unique qualities that make them great at fostering. They often understand what it feels like to experience discrimination or prejudice, and that helps them create a safe place for children who've been through tough times.
All carers receive tailored support, comprehensive training, and up to £29,000 per year (depending on skills and experience)
