Legislative Update
Honoring the Fallen
This week, three families received the worst possible news. On Sunday, two Burnsville officers and a firefighter/medic were killed in the line of duty. This hits close to home, because one of those officers lived in our community. During Monday's legislative session, we paid tribute to these fallen heroes with a moment of silence. My colleague, Representative Jeff Witte, spoke during the tribute and had poignant words to share as we honored Officer Paul Elmstrand, Officer Matthew Ruge, and firefighter Adam Finseth. If you'd like to listen to the tribute, click here.
School Resource Officers
Republicans have been working since August to find a fix for the school resource officer bill that was passed last session and resulted in dozens of schools across the state losing their SROs. This week it seems we are finally making some progress with a compromise that will bring SROs back into schools, as the bill moved from Public Safety to the Ways and Means committee. I look forward to voting for a bill supported by law enforcement that will bring our SROs back and empower them to keep our students and teachers safe.
Tax Bill Fix
Democrats broke a promise this week when they voted down an amendment that would have fixed an error from last year's tax bill that will cost Minnesota businesses close to $15 million if left undone. Unfortunately, even though both tax chairs from the House and Senate pledged in writing to fix the mistake at the "earliest possible opportunity", they voted down a fix during a debate on a bill that fixed the other three of the four mistakes from the bill. I am extremely disappointed that the DFL is leaving Minnesota businesses in the lurch in the height of tax season, and I will continue advocating for a fix as soon as possible.
