Hello and welcome to my weekly update!

This week has been a challenging one, with Parliament showing far from its best. The Tories and the SNP connived to make a debate of the lives of innocent people in Gaza into one about arcane procedure. Yet amidst the chaos, it is important to remember that Labour's motion passed, issuing a clear call for a ceasefire.

As I have done since this conflict began, I will continue to use my voice to call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, aid to be allowed into Gaza in much greater volumes, and for a two-state solution as the only way to put us on a path to peace.

On Wednesday, despite the chaos, I was pleased Parliament backed Labour's call for a ceasefire.

My speech sets out why the SNP motion failed to do this, and how Labour's plan, now backed by Parliament, is the only realistic way of securing an immediate and permanent ceasefire, and putting us on a path to peace.

On Thursday I travelled to Vienna as part of the UK delegation to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly, arriving later than planned to ensure I was in Parliament for the Gaza debate.

The OSCE was set up to bring the Warsaw Pact, NATO, and other non-aligned states together to discuss security and cooperation in Europe at the height of the Cold War. Today countries from across the northern hemisphere including Europe, Canada, the US, and several former USSR states come together in a forum to encourage shared dialogue on a range of security issues, whether military, economic, or environmental.

I was elected by colleagues to represent the UK back in 2019, and serve alongside parliamentarians from all parties.

I joined my UK delegation colleague Lord Alf Dubbs in a debate on human rights issue across the OSCE region, particularly in Russia and Belarus.

We also heard moving tributes to the late Alexey Navalny, the incredibly courageous Russian opposition campaigner who fought to expose the criminality and corruption at the heart of the Putin regime.
It was good to hear Minister Johnston address the Kinship Care APPG, that I chair, this week on the government’s Kinship strategy.

The strategy is a welcome development, but it needs to go much further to eradicate the significant inequalities that exist in Kinship care across the country.
Andrew in the constituency

The rain held off for two really good doorstep sessions last weekend, speaking with residents ahead of local and mayoral elections on 2nd May and a General Election at any time this year…

In the morning I was out with the brilliant Manchester Labour campaigners in Levenshulme, where three teams went to different parts of the ward. There was a lot of good conversations had.

In the afternoon I was over in Burnage. Again, lots of good conversations and support shown for Labour both locally and nationally.

We’ve two great local candidates in Councillor Bev Craig and Councillor Zahid Hussain.

It’s also really nice to get around the Manchester parts of the new Gorton and Denton constituency.

Everyone has been so welcoming!
Andrew in the the media

After 14 years of Conservative government, there is one key question we should be asking ourselves ahead of the general election.

Are we better off than we were in 2010?

For working people here in Tameside, the answer is an emphatic no.

This government has failed working people at every turn, keeping them down rather than helping them up.

Workers are trapped in a vicious cycle of insecure, low-paid work, alongside soaring household bills, stripping away any hope of a better future.

But it really does not have to be like this, and we know there is a better way.

Rather than a government that puts walls in front of working people, we need a government that helps people to knock them down.

We need a government that isn’t intent on enflaming the politics of division, but one that brings our communities together for the common good.

Most importantly, we need a government that is firmly in the service of working people, not their own vested interests.

It’s why I’m proud that my friend, Labour’s Deputy Leader, and a Tameside MP colleague, Angela Rayner, is leading the way on Labour’s New Deal for Working People.

It’s a plan that will boost wages and give people the security in work that they need to thrive, ensuring that we make work pay.

Labour will end the scourge of zero-hours contracts, deliver a genuine living wage, and clamp down on the scandalous practice of fire and re-hire.

These urgent and necessary changes will be underpinned by an Employment Rights Bill, that we have committed to bringing forward within the first 100 days of a Labour government.

The New Deal is a priority because it is central to our mission to grow the economy and raise living standards across the country.

As a party, Labour are proudly pro-worker and pro-business.

Far from being a contradiction in terms, it is a vital partnership as one cannot prosper whilst the other is failing.

Boosting incomes, securing better rights at work, and ending insecurity will mean greater productivity, and equitable, sustainable, economic growth.

Working people are crying out for change, and the Conservative Party have shown time after time that they are incapable of delivering.

Only with a decade of national renewal, spurred on by a New Deal, under Labour, can we deliver a brighter future.
