Lots of exciting things coming up at Mother's Refuge!   EXPANSION UPDATE: HIGHER GROUND In December 2022, we purchased a building to expand our capacity to serve more young moms and their children through our Transitional Living Program. Our new property, the former Higher Ground Boutique Hotel, is located in downtown Independence across the street from President Truman’s home. We will transform it into 12 apartments, offices, an indoor play space, and a community room for events, classes and outreach. This expansion will serve homeless, pregnant and parenting mothers 18 years of age and older. In the 3 years they are able to call their apartment home, moms will also receive counseling, case management, life skill courses, and wrap around support in a safe environment. Moms will pay 30% of their earned income as “rent”, which will be placed in a savings account for their family to access upon program completion. We are excited to announce that J.E. Dunn will begin construction in April 2024 with target completion of February 2025! Last year, we began the first phase of our $16,000,000 Capital Campaign. We have received over $7,000,000 in funds thus far. Thanks to the support of our community, we are off to a great beginning!.
