Hi John,
Taylor Swift AI deepfakes. A $25 million AI heist. AI Joe Biden.
AI is all over the news these days, and the potential consequences are becoming clear. The FCC just outlawed robocalls that use AI-generated voices, after people in New Hampshire got calls from an AI-ed Joe Biden discouraging them from voting.1 The FCC move is a good first step, but lawmakers are way behind in addressing concerns about AI. We're barely two months into an election year, and bad actors will absolutely keep looking for ways to exploit AI to manipulate voters and upset the democratic process.2
The Pandora’s Box of AI harms won’t be solved one bandaid at a time. That’s why we’re dramatically expanding our campaigning and educational work around artificial intelligence this year.3 We urgently need your help to sustain and grow this program.

The way we see it, the heart of the AI fever pitch is human rights:
-
AI exacerbates discrimination and bias
-
AI-powered scams, mis/disinfo, harassment, and deepfakes expose how easily our data is exploited without strong privacy protections
-
Although AI offers a lot of promise, it also requires skepticism and proactive conversations about its present and future4
We’ve called for civil society to be more involved in discussions about AI, actively engaging lawmakers about the unintended consequences of proposed AI legislation. Unfortunately, this intensive work takes time and money. We’re the first to admit that the results won’t happen overnight. But we’re not afraid to keep fighting year after year to get results. Will you support our AI long game?
