Better Learning.™   NASN News and Highlights Study Guides Care for Students With Mild Asthma Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)'s recent study Comparing Two Ways to Manage Asthma in African American Children - The ASIST Study adds to evidence that symptom-based adjustment of medication works as well as provider-based adjustment for treating children with mild persistent asthma. NASN now offers School Nurse Implementation Guidance with strategies, recommendations, and resources for understanding and implementing the study outcomes to support students with mild asthma. Coordinated Support System for Students with Epilepsy NASN's newly developed E-manual Coordinated Support System for Students with Epilepsy aims to build school nurse capacity and confidence to assess and address the physical and social needs of students with epilepsy – and build a network of community-based supports, resources, and self-management programs to connect students and families with. The E-manual allows school nurses to quickly locate and implement resources to develop a comprehensive school epilepsy program. COVID-19 Lessons Learned: Organizational Support for School Nurses School nurses encountered many workplace struggles while providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Let's Unite to Learn and Embrace Our Collective Power!   Managing Chronic Health Conditions Case Management for Students With Chronic Health Conditions Chronic health conditions in childhood are associated with chronic absenteeism, which increases the risk of poor school performance and long-term health outcomes. School nurse-led case management (SNLCM) assists students with health-related needs to manage their needs successfully, reduces barriers to academic performance, and increases student engagement. NASN's manual, A Model for School Nurse-Led Case Management, describes SNLCM and its benefits for students. It helps guide school nurses and school nurse leaders by providing implementation and evaluation strategies and tools. Campaign to Prevent Youth Vaping The Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council has launched a campaign featuring Native American youths to prevent vaping among teenagers called "Be Smart. Don't Start." You can view the highlight on the Montana Association of School Nurses' Facebook page, scan the QR codes to watch, and share the videos to spread awareness about the dangers of vaping. Funding Opportunity to Address Indoor Air Pollution at Schools Good indoor air quality (IAQ) is a critical component of a healthy indoor environment and can help schools achieve their primary goal of educating children. Grantees will assist K-12 schools in low-income, disadvantaged, and Tribal communities in the development and adoption of comprehensive IAQ management plans to address air pollution and energy efficiency consistent with EPA’s recommended best practices.
