I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well in these trying times. It’s critical that we all listen to medical professionals and follow the guidelines for protecting ourselves and others in order to halt the spread of the coronavirus. And, for those of us who are able, we should look for ways to help our neighbors and communities, while still staying safe.
But there is one thing all of us can do, right now, to protect our democracy: Help states implement vote-by-mail. [[link removed]]
This pandemic has the potential to linger well into election season. And while our public health is our paramount concern today, we need to be thinking about how we exercise our constitutional right to vote if crowded polling sites are still a risk for contagion. The best, and simplest, solution is for states to implement emergency vote-by-mail systems.
Unfortunately, most state electoral offices are woefully unprepared and underfunded to make such a transition. That’s where the federal government can help. We need Congress to provide funding for states to prepare for secure remote voting. The latest economic recovery bill in Congress includes $400 Million for state elections, but that simply isn’t enough.
That’s why we need you to email your Senators and Representative, to tell them that you want dedicated vote-by-mail funding for every state. Click here to tell them that no one should have to choose between their health and their right to vote. [[link removed]]
These are trying times. And all scientific evidence points to a lingering pandemic danger. We have to keep ourselves safe. But we also have to ensure our democracy is safe. Vote-from-home legislation is one key way to make sure that our elections stay resilient through any emergency.
