Dear John,
VoteRiders is proud to work alongside many outstanding organizations to expand and protect the voting rights of Black Americans. To celebrate Black History Month, we wanted to highlight one of the many amazing organizations we work with that is making sure Black voters are ready to vote in critical upcoming elections.
I spoke with Carter Spruill, the founder and president of the Coraopolis NAACP in Pittsburgh about the ways they’re working to empower Pennsylvania’s communities of color. You can read our entire conversation on the website.

Carter founded the Coraopolis NAACP branch to better serve the needs of the Black community locally. The organization is focused on getting people registered to vote and then getting them to actually vote — not just in November, but in upcoming primaries as well.
Coraopolis NAACP first connected with VoteRiders at a public voter registration event. Krystle, VoteRiders’ Pennsylvania Coordinator, came over to Carter’s table and started talking about voter ID requirements in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania’s law can be confusing because people need to show ID only if they’re voting in their precinct for the first time. That means that it’s not just first-time Pennsylvania voters who are asked to show ID at the polls – it’s also longtime voters who have recently moved and may not know they’ll need to show an ID at their new polling place.
VoteRiders provides the Coraopolis NAACP with state-specific PA Voter ID Information Cards, which they distribute at events. It’s a valuable service since the Coraopolis chapter doesn’t always have that information readily available, and these cards are also important ways for voters in need to connect to our free ID help services.
VoteRiders is proud to partner with more than 1,500 organizations, many of whom are working directly with Black voters. According to VoteRiders’ recent research , [[link removed]] 28 percent of Black adult citizens don’t have a current and up-to-date driver’s license, compared to just 5 percent of white adult citizens.
That’s a huge barrier for these voters to overcome when trying to vote in voter ID states.
Our partners like Carter are making a big difference for voters who don’t have the ID information they need. You can read more from my conversation with Carter! >> [link removed]
