Friend,
We’re celebrating Black History Month by highlighting Black leaders who are fighting for progressive change and justice – both in their communities and across the nation.
This week, we’re celebrating Representative Jasmine Crockett of Dallas, Texas!
|
Jasmine Crockett won her election in 2022 and has been a powerhouse ever since. Upon winning her seat, she immediately got to work as Freshman Leadership Representative – the first Black woman elected to the position since it was created in 2016. Rep. Crockett also serves on the powerful House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
Crockett took no time to find her place in government and immediately opted for standing out and speaking up, which earned her a huge online presence. During a Republican impeachment hearing into President Biden, Crockett pointed out far-right hypocrisy about former President Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents, holding up printed photos from his indictment showing boxes of classified documents in the Mar-a-Lago bathroom. Because of her virality, Crockett has connected with younger voters as they look for leaders who will push back against Republican lies.
|
Prior to her time in Congress, Crockett served as a civil rights attorney. Her passion for public service called her to run for State Representative in Texas. Upon her victory, Crockett became the sole Black freshman and youngest Black lawmaker in Texas during the 87th Legislative Session, also regarded as the most conservative session in Texas’ history.
Despite many obstacles, Crockett filed more bills than any other freshman, passed major criminal justice reform, and founded the Texas Progressive Caucus. Her dedication to better her home state ushered in an era of much needed accountability and transparency to the state legislature.
