In recent years, we have seen an uptick in divisive and dangerous policies that are aimed at banning books, limiting the freedom to read and learn for students, and silencing diverse stories and voices.?

This Black History Month, we are reflecting on the fact that books by Black authors are among some of the most frequently banned.? They tell important stories of survival in the South during slavery, the Black struggle against segregation, and the ongoing battle for racial justice.

This upcoming session we are expecting the Legislature to address and protect the freedom to read.
