Daily Docket — Wednesday, Feb. 21
We are remembering ([link removed]) the great John Lewis on his birthday today. The late congressman was a voting rights legend who fought tirelessly for equal rights for Black Americans.
Here are some recent updates.
* Senate Democrats, led by Sen. Jeff Merkley, sent ([link removed]) a letter pressing for the urgent implementation of President Joe Biden’s 2021 executive order that seeks to modernize and promote voting access.
* Today was a decision day for the U.S. Supreme Court, but the Court did not release decisions in two cases we’ve been tracking: Whether South Carolina's congressional map is racially gerrymandered ([link removed]) and whether former President Donald Trump is eligible ([link removed]) to be on Colorado's primary ballot.
* A New York appellate court affirmed ([link removed]) decision to strike down a New York City law that permits certain noncitizen residents to vote in local city elections. The court ruled that the law violates the state constitution.
* A trial has been scheduled ([link removed]) for April 8-9 in a lawsuit brought by "non-African American" voters arguing that Louisiana's new court-ordered congressional map with two majority-Black districts is racially gerrymandered.
* A federal court in Minnesota held ([link removed]) a hearing in a lawsuit filed by conservatives challenging a state law that makes certain acts of election misinformation, voter intimidation and harassment a crime.
* The Supreme Court rejected ([link removed]) appeals from Trump-aligned lawyers Sidney Powell and Lin Wood for legal sanctions they were hit with for falsely alleging in a court filing that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election in Michigan because of widespread voter fraud.
