It all adds up like 1-2-3

Dear Friends,

Did you see this depressing story in the New York Times? One in four - that’s right - one in four New York City children are living in poverty.

The cost of living is too much for families to bear; housing, childcare, food, utilities - it’s just not adding up for families struggling to get by. That’s why I’m fighting to pass my Working Families Tax Credit, which would be a lifeline to families in need, help lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty, and help make life easier for working class and middle class families across the state.

See for yourself! Last week we launched a new public calculator to show you how your family can benefit from the Working Families Tax Credit. All you need to do is enter your household income, tax filing status, and the number of dependents and you’ll see how much you’re currently eligible for under the state’s tax credit and then how the Working Families Tax Credit would boost that.

For example, a family of four with a household income of $50,000 receives only $1,375 under existing tax credits and exemptions, but could receive as much as $3,200 once the Working Families Tax Credit is fully phased in—and since the Working Families Tax Credit is indexed to inflation, families will eventually receive even more.

We’re in the midst of negotiating this year’s state budget, and stories like today’s make it incredibly clear that we have to do more to support working families. Now’s the time to pass the Working Families Tax Credit!

In solidarity,

Andrew
