Over the last year, some of the biggest names in journalism announced significant layoffs, including The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, CNN, NBC News... you name it. The list goes on and on.
But you know who hasn’t laid anyone off in that time? Common Dreams.
And do you know why? Is it because we budget carefully? Yes. Is it because our nonprofit model means we don’t have greedy investors breathing down our necks? Also yes.
But what’s the biggest reason independent media survives? It’s simple: Our readers always come through for us. They count on us, and we count on them — and that makes all the difference. ([link removed])
There are three keys to our success that set us apart from many of the other news outlets laying off staff.
1. We’re incredibly frugal, and unlike the big for-profit news outlets, we have no outside investors or vulture hedge funds trying to turn a quick buck.
2. Our journalists are extremely talented and hardworking. Reporters like Jake Johnson, Jessica Corbett, Julia Conley, Brett Wilkins, and Olivia Rosane bust their butts every day in service to our readers and the world they care so much about. We couldn’t do it without them.
3. Most important of all, we’ve survived this long thanks to the generous financial support of readers like you.
