The gist of Project 2025 is that right-wing Republicans want to use a little-known and currently unenforced law – The Comstock Act – to make it illegal to ship “anything designed, adapted, or intended for producing abortion” across state lines. The new interpretation of the law would criminalize shipping abortion medications and potentially medical equipment. Distressingly, it would also apply in states like Michigan, where abortion is legal and even constitutionally protected.
After voting overwhelmingly to enshrine reproductive rights into Michigan’s constitution, Michiganders have a right to know about right-wing efforts to take away their freedom.
That’s why we’re proud of The ‘Gander being one of the only local news organizations in the state to cover this important story.
Our coverage of reproductive rights in Michigan is nothing new. Since the right-wing Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, The ‘Gander has relentlessly reported on Michigan’s push to increase abortion access – and the ensuing right-wing resistance.
We know our mission to expose right-wing misinformation and election schemes is working because we tested it!
In an experiment conducted by our research team during the 2022 midterm elections, we found that individuals who saw our factual stories on abortion rights were more likely to support Michigan’s Prop. 3, the law enshrining reproductive freedom into Michigan’s constitution.
