Dear John,
State legislatures have been the focus of a national operation to repeal laws that protect the health, safety, and educational rights of young people in recent years. Since 2021, at least 61 bills to weaken child labor protections have been introduced across 29 states, including 18 bills that have been enacted in 14 states.
Together with our partners at the Economic Policy Institute, we just released a new report, “How States Can Stop the Corporate Campaign to Roll Back Child Labor Protections” to support state legislators in defending against these attacks on labor rights and in strengthening child labor protections.
The report delves into the tactics and the actors behind the campaign to deregulate child labor, one state at a time, revealing the same actors pushing a corporate-backed political agenda to gut safety net and unemployment programs, weaken workers’ rights, and attack our freedom to vote. The publication also provides examples of policy options that lawmakers and advocates can champion to strengthen protections for young workers at the state level.
