Hi John,
In order to build a new fossil fuel project, companies need three things: permits, money and insurance. Without insurance, most new fossil fuel projects cannot go ahead, and existing ones must close. This makes insurance the Achilles heel of the fossil fuel industry.
We're supporting the Insure Our Future global week of action to hold insurers accountable and help accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels. We’ll be asking them to immediately stop insuring new and expanded coal, oil, and gas projects and the companies developing them, and adopt policies that respect human rights, especially those of impacted communities. Together, we will ensure that a just climate transition makes polluters pay and protects people on the front line.
Insurance campaigning has already made new coal power plants almost uninsurable, threatening their viability. Coal companies are finding it increasingly difficult to access insurance cover even for their ongoing operations. Now we need to do the same for oil and gas expansion.
The week of action runs from Monday 26 February to Sunday 3 March. In the UK, there are two major ways that you can get involved:
1. Join a protest in person
UK actions are taking place in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Leicester, Chipping Norton, Colchester, Oxford, Bristol, London, Croydon and Brighton in the course of the week
