Any victory over communist ideology is cause for celebration, and I’m here to share the latest win from our Atlas Network partners in Bulgaria: Institute for Market Economics (IME).

To catch you up, Bulgaria is a country about the size of Tennessee in southeast Europe. It actually hasn’t been a communist state since 1989.

But before that time, Bulgaria was one of the Soviet Union’s most loyal satellites, and some horrific communist ideas about government power took root in their country and never let go—until now.

As a last vestige from the bad old days of Soviet influence, prosecutors in the country long operated with impunity, wielding authority above the law. Their unchecked power instilled fear and created uncertainty among entrepreneurs and citizens alike, burdening Bulgaria with a reputation for corruption.

Thanks to our generous Atlas Network supporters, we were able to provide training, grants, and mentorship for our partners at IME in their successful local campaign to amend Bulgaria’s constitution and make prosecutors in the country accountable to the rule of law.

These victories don’t happen overnight. IME was founded in 1993 in a very different Bulgaria, but their relatively small and extremely mighty team continues to set their country on course for a freer future.
