1) Democrats Prefer a Government Shutdown Over 1% Cut in Spending
In yesterday's HOTLINE, we laid out the case against a government shutdown:

But now it appears that House Repubs may be taking our sage advice and settling on the 1% across-the-board sequester of government agency budgets. We should be cutting program spending by 10% to 20% given that the federal government is LOSING $1.5 trillion in its operations every year. But incredibly, the Democrats say they can’t live with even a 1% cut in spending and so now they are the ones who may trigger a government shutdown:

The Axios story reports that Democrats are likely to block a clean CR that allows the 1% cuts to take effect:

All the more reasons for Speaker Mike Johnson to double down. Republicans should bring a clean continuing resolution on the floor. Any Democrat voting against it would have to explain to the American people why they prefer a shutdown to a minuscule 1% cut to a budget, even after they’ve added some $5 trillion of new spending under Biden.

On the budget stalemate, Republicans may have flipped the table on the Democrats. They should take their case to voters: Democrats are so addicted to debt spending that they won’t even accept a teeny weeny cut of less $50 billion out of a $6 trillion annual budget.

2) New York Democrats Will Put their State Pensions in Danger in Order to Combat Climate Change
The New York state pension fund announced last week that it is going to divest from oil and gas and double its investments in trendy green energy companies:

[link removed]
Hello!! Last year green investments lost bundles of money while the oil and gas industry was one of the highest-performing sectors.

Making investment decisions based on politics is a risky way to gamble retirement funds, and we suspect that New York and the other blue states on this map will be lining up for taxpayer bailouts at some point:

3) Bidenomics Means Not Affording to Own a Home
Data from real estate investment firm CBRE illustrates a stark reality: average monthly payments on a new home soared to $3,322 in the third quarter of [2023], marking a staggering 90% increase since late 2020 when it hovered at just $1,746 before Biden took office.

Rates and home prices have come down a bit since December, but mortgage payments are at least 50% higher than last year. Wait. We thought Biden had conquered inflation.

4) The Biden Bureaucrat Who Does the Unions' Bidding
We’ve written a lot more on FTC chair Lina Kahn’s maniacal litigation, but NLRB general counsel Jennifer Abruzzo is going all out to compete to be the Biden administration's top job destroyer.

Last year, Abruzzo limited confidentiality and nondisparagement clauses in severance agreements. Then she targeted non-compete agreements by employees, arguing that asking workers to agree not to sign up with a competitor is a violation of their rights. The newsletter, Employment Law, says she believes that “if workers are barred from accepting jobs elsewhere that require the same skillsets, they’re unlikely to threaten to quit en masse” and be able to pressure the company.

Another of her moves was an attempt to strike down bans on moonlighting by employees. She claims such restrictions can prevent a worker from taking on a job at a specific workplace helping a union organize the facility.

The radical Nation magazine has crowed that “of all of the members of Biden’s administration, it’s arguably Abruzzo who has brought about the most significant changes for American workers.” They might be right – but those changes will hamstring legitimate business practices, hurting both companies and the job opportunities they are able to offer workers.
