Research: New Arrivals’ Economic and Tax Contributions

PIF partner Immigration Research Initiative (IRI) recently released an analysis of the economic and fiscal contributions of people who’ve recently arrived seeking asylum. IRI found that, within five years of arrival in the U.S., every 1,000 people adds up to $45 million to a state’s economy and up to $5 million in state and local tax revenue. The national analysis includes estimates for every state, and IRI developed more detailed analyses in partnership with advocates in Colorado, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Recent changes to the FAFSA process now require parents to verify their identity. Currently, this process has no work around for parents who do not have a social security number, creating a barrier for students with undocumented parents. PIF partners ImmSchools and NILC have collaborated on a comment focused on the student, educator and parent experience around this issue. The comment makes recommendations geared towards minimizing the burden of this process on mixed-status families. ImmSchools welcomes partners to sign on to the comment by 2/26 10am EST.

Social Media: Estamos en Instagram

PIF’s social media presence focused initially on Twitter, as many of our member organizations used that platform. In an effort to make PIF content more accessible to immigrant families, we’ve recently started a Spanish-language Instagram account. We’ve begun following partner organization handles and hope you’ll follow our new account (and our Twitter account too).

Resource: Telling Authentic Immigrant Stories

We really like Define American’s Telling Authentic Immigrant Stories: A Media Reference Guide , which offers best practices for portraying immigrants and immigrant families on TV and film, in books and news, or on YouTube and TikTok. It includes detailed descriptions, definitions, terminology, historical timelines, data, and resources for content creators on a wide range of relevant topics. While the guide does not dive deeply into immigrant families’ access to safety net programs, we thought it might be useful to your organization and the content creators you work with.
