Its Time to Officially End Unpaid Internships - Harvard Business Review (No paywall) While internships have high value in the job market, research shows that 43% of internships by for-profit companies are unpaid. Not paying an intern for their work, time, and effort is not just unfair, it’s unethical and exploitative. Unpaid internships deepen the existing social divide. A survey conducted by NACE found that paid internships disproportionately go to white, male students with parents who have a college degree. The survey also revealed that unpaid interns get the same number of job offers as those without an internship. So, an unpaid internship is as good (or bad) for your career as not doing an internship at all. There is a better, more equitable solution to unpaid internships: micro-internships. Micro-internships are short-term, paid projects for college students. Unlike summer internships, they are available throughout the year. Micro-internships can help students explore opportunities beyond their college major and learn highly generalized transferable skills.

WorkWorkU.S. Prepares ‘Major Sanctions’ Against Russia Over Navalny’s Death In response to a question about the effectiveness of previous sanctions, Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, maintained that the United States and its partners had “imposed the most severe sanctions on Russia that any economy of its size has ever faced.” WorkHaley Says She Is Not Dropping Out: ‘I Feel No Need to Kiss the Ring’ Ms. Haley also contended that many of the Republican politicians “who now publicly embrace Trump privately dread him” and were “too afraid” to speak up, despite knowing he had been “a disaster” for the party. She said Americans deserved a choice and “not a Soviet-style election where there’s only one candidate and he gets 99 percent of the vote.” WorkAmerican Airlines is raising fees for checking bags “The old way of booking a ticket relied on agents having a ton of experience and understanding product attributes,” Chandler said. “The old technology doesn’t let us explain things very well, and it is a little more confusing for customers when we introduce new products.” WorkWorkWorkX briefly suspends account of Alexei Navalny's widow In a video message posted the same day, Ms Navalnaya accused Russian authorities of waiting for traces of the deadly nerve agent Novichok to disappear from her husband\'s body before releasing it to his family. The Kremlin said the accusation was unfounded and an investigation into his death was ongoing. WorkWhat to Know About Capital One’s Proposed Acquisition of Discover Credit card debt in the United States has soared, particularly as Americans try to cover rising expenses as a result of high inflation, and more vendors are shifting away from using cash. Capital One issues cards on networks run by Visa and Mastercard, and acquiring Discover would help it expand its payment operations. WorkWorkAmerican Airlines raises bag fees, won't allow some travel agency bookings to earn miles American also said on Tuesday that it will start limiting which tickets purchased through a third party are eligible to earn AAdvantage frequent flyer miles, a move that aims to drive traffic to American\'s website and the latest in a series of changes to the program. It said it will provide a list in April of preferred travel agencies whose bookings will still be eligible for the rewards credits. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkWorkRussia arrests US dual national over alleged $51 Ukrainian charity donation Both Russia and the US have said there are backroom talks about a potential prisoner exchange, but do not appear to have struck a deal yet. Putin compared Gershkovich to Vadim Krasikov, an FSB hitman who was handed a life sentence in Germany for the assassination of Chechen field commander Zelimkhan Khangoshvili in Berlin, when asked about the case by the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in an interview the Russian president said had a “lack of sharp questions”. WorkDanish man on trial over alleged £500k music streaming fraud She added: "Criminals see a market in generating artificial plays that mimic organic listening patterns, in order to access royalties from music streaming services. However, artificially generated plays are in violation of the user terms found on music services like Spotify, YouSee and Tidal." WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkAlcaraz rolls ankle, exits Rio Open after 2 games Earlier, three-time major winner Stan Wawrinka was beaten 7-5, 6-4 in the first round by Argentina\'s Facundo Diaz Acosta. The 23-year-old Díaz Acosta won his first title on Sunday at the Argentina Open. WorkWorkWhat we learned from the new Messi doc, and predictions for Inter Miami Just a quick one on Kylian Mbappé and his imminent move (please, let it be so, for all our sakes) to Real Madrid. I think PSG fans should see the Mbappé exit as a glass-half-full situation. They will be able to save €200m every year, fully cultivate their youth academy, which has tremendous talent, sign one or two stars who will demand less cost and begin to focus on the squad and not the individual. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkTransfer Talk: Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea to battle for Guehi - Paris Saint-Germain are keen for midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery and winger Xavi Simons to be the \"faces of their future project,\" however, a new deal for the latter has not yet been discussed, per Fabrizio Romano. While it is expected that Zaire-Emery will agree upon a new deal with the French champions, Simons\' future remains unclear. The 20-year-old is currently on loan at RB Leipzig. WorkCollege softball rankings: The top 25 teams after Week 2, plus players to watch Rachel Castine, UT, Virginia Tech. She\'s stepped up in a big way to start the Hokies\' 2024 season. Castine has 18 RBIs, the third most in the nation, and her five home runs tie her for the second most. She blasted her third grand slam over the weekend against Cal and earned her first ACC Player of the Week award after the first week of games. WorkDaytona 500 is never fair but Byron's victory is no fluke \"What we know about this race is that we don\'t know what is going to happen. For a long time, we have hauled zero trophies home, but instead we have hauled home a lot of wrecked race cars,\" an emotional Rick Hendrick explained, quick to remind that, yes, this was his ninth Daytona 500 win, but his first in a decade. \"There are always a lot of surprises in this race and at this place. Mostly bad ones. But no one should be surprised that William Byron is a Daytona 500 champion.\" WorkWorkWorkA comprehensive guide to F1's preseason testing What\'s more, the cars that run in testing this week might look surprisingly basic or underdeveloped when we look back at them at the end of the year. For the bigger teams, some updates will come as early as the first race, and it\'s not unheard of for performance to be unlocked by an upgrade between testing and the season opener. WorkAt Harvard, Some Wonder What It Will Take to Stop the Spiral There was a hint of a more assertive approach by Harvard on Monday, when the university announced that it was investigating “deeply offensive antisemitic tropes” posted on social media by pro-Palestinian student and faculty groups. The groups had posted or reposted material containing an old cartoon of a puppeteer, his hand marked by a dollar sign inside a Star of David, lynching Muhammad Ali and Gamal Abdel Nasser. WorkWorkRiding His Baseball Fame, Steve Garvey Disrupts the California Senate Race And in a strategic move that has become common in California, Mr. Schiff has perhaps done more to help Mr. Garvey than Mr. Garvey himself. The leading Democrat has spent $10 million on ads that ostensibly attack Mr. Garvey as “too conservative for California” but that have the likely effect of rallying a critical mass of Republican voters to his side. The result has been an improbable disruption of a contest that was expected to be dominated by two Democratic members of Congress. WorkThe Kansas City Super Bowl Parade Shooting: What We Know Two teenagers were charged with resisting arrest and “gun-related” offenses on Friday, officials said, in connection with the shooting. The connection between the two men who were charged with murder and the teenagers who were charged with lesser offenses last week is unclear. WorkWorkEx-Informant Accused of Lying About Bidens Said He Had Russian Contacts The memo describes Mr. Smirnov as a human hall of mirrors: He fed the F.B.I. bogus information about the Bidens and misled prosecutors about his wealth, estimated at $6 million, while telling them he worked in the security business, even though the government could find no proof that was true. WorkWorkJustice Alito Renews Criticism of Landmark Ruling on Same-Sex Marriage Only two members of the court who ruled in favor of Obergefell remain on the bench — Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. The court has since transformed under the presidency of Donald J. Trump with the addition of three conservative justices who have solidified a conservative supermajority. WorkWorkA Nerve Center for the Right Wing Rises in Washington The message at the conference was “taking on the Swamp” from a nonprofit with a $36 million annual budget from private donors that now operates as a full-service nerve center for right-wing activity and a breeding ground for the next generation of Trump loyalists. WorkWorkHundreds of Ukrainian Troops Feared Captured or Missing in Chaotic Retreat Ukrainian military officials have said they want to mobilize up to 500,000 more people, but the request has met political resistance and is stalled in Parliament. The capture of hundreds of soldiers, especially those with battlefield experience, would make the need for more troops more acute and complicate the effort to recruit more. WorkPowerball Posted the Wrong Numbers. Now He’s Suing for $340 Million. The numbers on Mr. Cheeks’s ticket were not the official winning figures for the drawing on Jan. 7, 2023, according to a motion to dismiss the case from Taoti Enterprises, a contractor based in Washington that markets the lottery and is a defendant in the suit. The numbers were part of a test, the company said, and a staff member had “mistakenly posted” them to the live lottery website. WorkWorkSupreme Court Won’t Hear New Case on Race and School Admissions The revisions to the Virginia admissions program followed protests over the 2020 murder of George Floyd. Amid concerns about how few Black and Hispanic students attended the school, one of the country’s top public high schools, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va., adopted what it said were race-neutral admissions standards. The school board did away with a rigorous entrance examination and prioritized admission to the top students from each public middle school in the area rather than the top applicants from any school. WorkThe Quiet Way Democrats Hope to Expand Their Power at the State Level Pointing to the rightward tilt of the Supreme Court and important statewide court battles, Meghan Meehan-Draper, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association, said that voters needed to be reminded of the power “Democratic governors have to appoint judges who are going to uphold the rule of law.” WorkNikki Haley will address the state of the race today. With just four days remaining until the South Carolina primary, Ms. Haley has sought to sharpen her contrasts with Mr. Trump, portraying his legal troubles as an insurmountable liability and predicting that the former president, if nominated, will use the Republican National Committee as “his piggy bank for his personal court cases” and will lose in November. Only seven companies in the world — including Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia — have market caps over $1 trillion. The pharmaceutical giant’s market cap currently stands at $542 billion. |
