Friend,

On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver took a strong stance against the rampant corruption on the Supreme Court: He’ll offer Clarence Thomas $1 million a year to resign. Does that sound ridiculous to you? Because Thomas’ luxurious lifestyle has been paid for by billionaires who want to keep him on the Court for decades. Clarence Thomas has been receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts and trips from his conservative benefactors for years and it has gone largely unchecked…at least Oliver’s gifts to Thomas would be transparent.

On the show, Oliver said that, “If we’re going to keep the bar of accountability this low, perhaps it’s time to exploit that low bar the same way billionaires have successfully done for decades” before offering the lump sum of money and a luxury motor coach to get Justice Thomas to leave the Court.

We all deserve better than a Supreme Court that so clearly works for the ultra-wealthy and special interests rather than the American people. If you agree with John Oliver that the corruption on the Court is unacceptable and dangerous, please chip in $10 right now so we can work together to pass judicial ethics reform.

John Oliver was right. The rampant corruption on the Supreme Court has led to rulings wildly out of step with public opinion and caused distrust among the American people. We need to pass the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency (SCERT) Act as soon as possible. This way we can prevent further corruption in our Supreme Court by improving the financial disclosure process, strengthening recusal standards, and creating an enforceable code of conduct for the Court, something that, clearly, it is in desperate need of.

Without the help of every single person reading this, we won’t have the power to get Congress to pass the SCERT Act. The SCERT Act is crucial so we can prevent additional corruption and judicial interference by the ultra-wealthy and powerful. If you agree with what John Oliver said about Court corruption, can you chip in $10 so we can keep working together to dismantle the ultra-wealthy’s influence on the Supreme Court?
