We are days away from a government shutdown, and Congress is on vacation.

John Here we go again!

Republicans in Congress have pushed us to the brink of another government shutdown.

If you feel like we’ve been talking about this for months, you’re not crazy. We were. This is the fourth time Republicans have kicked the can down the road. But today, I’m really mad.

Last week, the Republican Speaker adjourned the House for a two week vacation. They’re due to come back to work only TWO DAYS before the first of two deadlines to avoid a shutdown – and they have no deal in place.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – shutting down the federal government is serious. Using that threat as a political football is irresponsible and dangerous.

A government shutdown doesn’t just impact Washington D.C. It means millions of government employees – including many right here in Idaho – are at risk of being furloughed or forced to work without pay for who knows how long. These are not people being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Many earn less than $50,000 a year.

A graphic featuring a headline from KTVB7 in Boise, Idaho, which reads: “Idaho TSA employees worry about government shutdown impact. A union representative said employees are stressed thinking about making ends meet if there is a shutdown.” Included is a photo of a TSA agent checking a passenger’s ID at the Boise Airport.

It’s not just federal employees either. Poor working families who depend on food assistance like SNAP and WIC will go hungry. And the shutdown will lead to delays in Social Security, Disability, and Medicare claims.

There is simply no one to blame for this mess but House Republicans. Between the revolving door on the Speakers office to sham impeachments, the Republican Majority has no plan to get us out of this.

I’m running to flip ID-02 because we have got to get Republicans out of power and put an end to this chaos and dysfunction. And unlike the Republican speaker, I DO have a plan to win this seat.

Will you pitch in $25 now to help me staff up to train our canvassing volunteers?

The disarray of the Republican party is an embarrassment. But it’s nothing we can’t get rid of if we come together.

My opponent, Mike Simpson, was in Congress for the last shutdown the Republicans forced on us. On his watch, it dragged on for 35 days, cost our economy $11 BILLION, pushed hundreds of thousands of faithful public servants to the brink of financial ruin – and that’s just the beginning.

Funding the government is Congress’ single most important duty. It is the primary function of the legislative branch of government outlined in the United States Constitution – which Mike Simpson swore to uphold and protect.

We deserve representatives who won’t play games with people’s lives. Pitch in now to help me flip ID-02 next year so we can take back the House majority and get back to work.

Let’s do this!

David Roth

David Roth is a single, gay dad running for Idaho’s Second Congressional District. We’re going up against a GOP incumbent who has been in this seat for 25 years. It’s time for change in Idaho, and our grassroots campaign is building on the momentum that began in David’s race for U.S. Senate last cycle. The GOP is not planning to defend this seat, so we plan to take it from them and help Democrats retake the House majority next year. We’d love your support to build a solid campaign to bring progress to Idaho and the country.
