Great news! We just won one of our cases. Our client, Dr. Johnson Varkey, is getting his job back.
St. Philip’s College in San Antonio fired him a year ago. Why? Because he taught basic and widely accepted concepts of biology to his students. He taught that sex is determined by X and Y chromosomes, consistent with his study of human biology and religious beliefs.
As part of the settlement, the college guaranteed that Dr. Varkey will be back to teaching in spring 2024. He will also receive an undisclosed monetary amount if he doesn’t receive a class in time, and he will teach two classes in fall 2024.
Dr. Varkey is going back to the classroom, where he belongs. And it’s all thanks to your support. YOU are the one who made this victory possible.
Thank you for all the prayers and encouragement you sent our way during this case. This means everything to Dr. Varkey, as well as to everyone on our team.
“I love science and I love to teach,” Dr. Varkey said. “I am excited about returning to the classroom and am grateful to all those who helped me get my teaching job back.”
“We are happy that the Alamo Community College District voluntarily reinstated Dr. Varkey,” said First Liberty attorney Kayla Toney. “He is excited by this outcome, and we are glad that ACCD did the right thing. Dr. Varkey looks forward to continuing to educate students.”
As always, thank you for giving so generously. Every donation you make to First Liberty turns into real impact for everyday American heroes. It’s your donation that provides them with the best legal defense possible.
Let’s celebrate this win together! Dr. Varkey has been rightfully vindicated. He’s once again free to fulfill his calling and do what he does best. That’s the impact of your gift to First Liberty.
