John,

After one of the worst years ever for news media job layoffs, 2024 is off to another bad start.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal and CBS both announced cuts to their news division. The latest layoffs come on the heels of depressing cuts/merger news from Sports Illustrated , Pitchfork , and, pillar of journalistic integrity, The Baltimore Sun (which was bought up by right-wing Sinclair media).

Last year was historically bad for the news industry, with more than 20,000 reporters losing their jobs. If layoffs continue at the same rate, that number could double in 2024.

As outlets cut reporters or close their doors entirely, people around the country are left in ‘news deserts,’ without access to reliable local news. These folks are more likely to turn to social media for their news – where misinformation spreads like wildfire.

COURIER can help bridge the gap in these communities.

If you support our mission to bring free, factual local news to the people who need it most, will you give $10 or whatever you can? [[link removed]]

COURIER’s research-backed model works to provide factual local news to those who need it most, while combating right-wing misinformation campaigns. Here’s how it works:

* We set up our newsrooms in battleground states across the country, focusing on ‘news deserts’ where quality local news is hard to come by.
* Our reporters work around the clock to provide factual, left-leaning news that matters.
* We put our news where people already are – on social media news feeds and in email inboxes – to fight back against the misinformation on those platforms.

And the best part, John? All our news is free. We’re not looking for a profit, so we’ll never compromise on the truth or our values to drive clicks or subscriptions.

This type of work takes resources, and we count on donations from supporters like you to retain our talented reporters and continue the work. Can we count on you to give $10 to help us out? [[link removed]]
