Hi, Illinois Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton here.

Earlier this month, I was honored to attend the Black History Month celebration at the White House.

Connecting with Black leaders from around the country in the most foundational building in America — the symbol of our country’s power and government — to celebrate our history and our power was beautiful…but knowing it had been built by the hands of enslaved Black Americans made it even more impactful.

For so long the history of Black Americans was framed as a footnote in our country’s history when in reality it’s the foundation. I am so proud that we have pushed for our history and culture to be included in the classrooms — and continue to do so despite what some “culture warriors” will say.

While Black History Month is only a month of the year, the struggles facing the Black community are not, and our nation’s long history of white supremacy manifests in our everyday lives. We must come together, organize, and send a message to echo across the nation: Black excellence can not, and will not, be erased. Part of that is electing Black leaders at EVERY level of government, which is why I’m reaching out to you today.

The DLGA represents the most diverse group of statewide elected officials in the country, and I’m proud to stand with them to help elect other Democratic LGs who will move us forward in our mission for racial justice. I have a goal of raising $5,000 this Black History Month to fund our work — can I count on you to chip in $10 or more today to help us build a more diverse government?

Through the pain and struggle that our community has endured over centuries, we have shown time and time again that we won’t be erased. Instead, we’re claiming our spots in the rooms of power — just like the White House.

Thank you for helping make that possible.
