We are pleased to announce the winner of our most recent Monday Nature Mystery, Manoma Sirisena. (Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected]).
Congratulations to Manoma for correctly identifying this Green Ash tree (Fraxinus pennsylvanica). According to Glen Arboretum, Green ash is the most adaptable type of ash tree and can tolerate 15-60 inches of rain a year. Green ash trees do not need a lot of sunlight, only 6 hours a day, so they can grow moderately in shaded areas like dense forests. Wildlife use this species’ strong, stout branches for nesting, and numerous birds use them for roosting, including Eastern Screech Owl, Cooper’s Hawk, Wild Turkey, Ruffed Grouse, and Common Grackle. Birds such as wood ducks, cardinals, wild turkeys, and finches, as well as mice, eat green ash tree seeds. Insects also feed on the tree: Tiger Swallowtail, Brown-headed Ash Sawfly, and many species of moth caterpillars feed on the leaves. Deer will also feed on the foliage and twigs.
