America’s precious remaining old-growth forests are being logged — and
President Biden can save them with the stroke of a pen.

These ancient woodlands are not just trees — they’re irreplaceable
ecosystems, home to countless endangered species. Old-growth trees absorb
and store huge amounts of carbon — also making them exponentially
important in the fight against climate change.

The destruction of old-growth forests is another tragic case of corporate
profits trumping environmental protections. It’s another instance of
corporate lobbyists capturing government policy to boost CEO bonuses and
shareholder value at the expense of the rest of us.

President Biden has the sole power to protect these forests and, on
President’s Day, it’s time he makes a legacy action by signing an
executive order with ironclad protections for old-growth trees.

The redwoods of California, the Tongass National Forest in Alaska,
Chattahoochee National Forest in South Carolina and Georgia, and the
mountainous Adirondack forests in New York are all examples of beautiful,
irreplaceable old-growth forests.

The destruction of old-growth forests is not just an environmental issue.
Indigenous communities have centuries-old connections to many old-growth
forests and are reliant on sustainable use of its resources for
traditional practices.

The sad fact is, 95% of old-growth forests have already been destroyed by
the logging industry. It makes it even more important that President Biden
leaves no room for corporations to continue this destruction.
