Hello,
In this week’s edition, I discuss how to organize yourself in accordance with a hierarchical identity that is individual and social. Then, I talk with Chris Bumstead, a five-time Mr. Olympia Classic Physique champion, about fitness, business, and family. From the archives, I explain how ethics determine success.

How To Manage The Hierarchy Of Responsibility
The book of Exodus lays out a psychological and social alternative to tyranny and chaos. There are two extremes of misgovernment: one is hierarchical order; the other is desert chaos. Exodus includes a notion of hierarchical identity that is both individual and social, and it very much parallels the essence of identity itself.
First and foremost, you are responsible for yourself, and that is a duty and an obligation but also a source of meaning — of meaningful striving. If you can manage that, then you can imbed yourself within a couple; that is another place you can derive meaning and identity.
And if the two of you can organize yourselves intelligently as a mutually sacrificial couple because you are sacrificing your short-term impulses for each other’s well-being, then you can establish a family. That is your next level of responsibility. Next, maybe a community or a business enterprise, and then maybe a town, city, state, or nation. And I think that being nested under God is a time-tested alternative to top-down tower of Babel centralism and the absolute chaos of the fragmented identity unfolding in the world now. I also think that is why this message of responsibility is echoing so deeply with young people — because meaning is to be found in that subsidiary hierarchy of responsibility.
It is also ethical to focus your attention first on what is local to you. Take care of yourself, then take care of your spouse. That does not mean other people are not important, but it means that you have a hierarchy of responsibility. You should take care of what is local and immediate before you dare ordain to presume you are capable of doing something that is more abstract.

When Your Father Is The Mafia
You talked about viewing law enforcement as an enemy and an enemy worth continually battling against, even at personal cost and not blaming your father. You said you loved your father, and that he was a good father to you. Correct me at any point if I have this wrong, but your father was engaged in widespread criminal activity. Why was that not an issue when you were young? Why do you think that his guilt on that front was more or less invisible to you?

Your Ethics Determine Your Success
In one of my lectures a few years ago, I explained how ethics determine success, not power. You are to keep your eyes open for corruption and speak truth so when the corruption starts to take root, you object to it. That is part of your ethical responsibility as a conscious, ethical, and religious being — and a citizen. You are charged with that; it is why you vote and why you are the cornerstone of your state. You are the wellspring of the ethical actions that replenish the dying world.
