Last year saw a 50% spike in news industry layoffs in the U.S., one of the worst years ever for journalism.
But 2024 already looks like it’s going to be even worse.
In January, the Los Angeles Times announced that 115 reporters would be laid off. Layoffs have also been announced at Time, The Intercept, The Messenger, and Business Insider. The right-wing owner of Sinclair Broadcasting purchased the Baltimore Sun, and 2.5 newspapers shut down every week.
These layoffs aren't just cutting the fat. They are slicing deep into the bone and muscle of civic life — all at a time when democracy is under attack, the climate is in crisis, and a genocidal war in Gaza has created a humanitarian catastrophe like nothing we've ever seen.
We're proud that Common Dreams has not been forced to make these kinds of cuts. Still, we're facing many of the same economic trends hammering others in the journalism industry, including rising costs and Big Tech throttling traffic to legitimate news sites.
