John—Fair and equal access to the ballot box is our nation’s bedrock principle and the foundation of all the progress we’ve made as a nation.
But since the gutting of the Voting Rights Act by the radical, far-right Supreme Court, Republican lawmakers across the country have been working nonstop to make it harder for Americans—especially Black and brown Americans—to vote. They’re using every trick in the Jim Crow playbook to stop people from voting, from ID requirements to gerrymandering to shutting down voting centers in rural communities. That’s why I got to work immediately when I was first sworn in to co-author legislation including the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect our right to vote—legislation passed by the House when we had a Democratic majority. Sadly, Republican obstruction and another Jim Crow relic—the Senate filibuster—blocked our efforts. Today, I promise you this: when I return to Congress, I won’t stop fighting until we pass comprehensive voting rights legislation and forever secure equal access to the ballot box. Will you help me in the fight right now? Add your name to demand to join me in demanding Congress pass critical and urgent voting rights legislation now. The fact is, our democracy is in crisis. It faces its greatest test since Jim Crow. Today’s Republican Party has completely abandoned democracy—instead choosing to side with the serially indicted former President, Donald Trump, who incited an insurrection and attempted to toss out the votes of Black and brown voters in places like Georgia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Congressman Mike Lawler and his Republican colleagues went even further and elected Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House—the legal architect of House Republican efforts to overturn the election. Our nation is at a turning point, but we’ve been here before. It’s time to dig deep and fight hard to get us through the wilderness with democracy still intact. We can restore the Voting Rights Act, ban partisan gerrymandering, make Election Day a national holiday, enact automatic voter registration, and more—but we must act. Add your name to call on Congress to take up critical voting rights legislation now and save our democracy. I will not rest until it’s done. Mondaire
