Dear John,
President Biden called it a “death panel for Medicare and Social Security,” and he is right!
The House Budget Committee has passed their so-called “fiscal commission,” which is really a way to meet behind closed doors to spread the blame for their plans to cut billions from key social programs that the American people love. Now Speaker Mike Johnson wants to add it to “must-pass” legislation.
Meanwhile we are losing $1 trillion dollars per year in unpaid taxes from corporations and multi-millionaire or billionaire tax cheats.
Why not go after these wealthy tax cheats, instead of cutting programs that sustain millions of ordinary Americans, including seniors, disabled, and low income families?
116 Democrats in Congress have joined a letter by Reps. John Larson and Jan Schakowsky, urging Johnson not to attach this “commission” to “must-pass” funding bills. Let’s add our voices to theirs and tell the Republicans: We will not balance the budget at the expense of older Americans, low-income families, and people with disabilities.
Sign the petition to tell Congress: Reject the so-called “fiscal commission” designed to cut Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors!
There is no question that Americans of both parties want Social Security and Medicare expanded. 80% of Americans in recent polling want Social Security and Medicare to be protected. No wonder Republicans want to do their dirty work in secret.
If they can get a single Democrat to serve on the commission, they can call it “bipartisan,” in an attempt to share the blame for their destructive agenda. Democrats must stand together against this cynical “fiscal commission.”
Despite their profligate record of deficit-exploding mega-tax cuts for the super-rich, Republicans are trying to present themselves as the party of fiscal prudence. In reality, the GOP will always fight any efforts to make the wealthy pay their fair share for the greater good.
Democrats must stand firm and refuse to lend the commission any kind of fig leaf to disguise their true intent. Only when we insist on holding this debate in the public eye will it be possible for voters to see the facts: The contrast is clear. Democrats plan to expand Social Security, while Republicans plan to slash it.
Tell Congress not to shroud such an important debate in secrecy. They must insist on holding the debate in the open, so voters can decide the future America they want.
Sign the petition: Reject the fiscal commission! Don’t let the GOP cut Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors!
Thank you for letting Congress know we are watching them.
