John,
The Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade is not the last word. Now we need the Women’s Health Protection Act: the national legislative response to ensure that women have access to safe and legal abortion when needed.
Since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, more than 20 states have placed bans or restrictions on abortion care, with more to come, affecting millions of women. National standards are needed so that regardless of what state one lives in, women will have access to necessary health care as they themselves deem necessary.
Despite widespread support for abortion rights across the country, the bill will have an uphill battle in Congress. We need to show the GOP that they will lose both houses due to their opposition to essential women’s healthcare and the right of women to own their own bodies.
The Women's Health Protection Act would:
-
Make abortion always available when needed to protect a woman’s health
-
Prohibit extreme bans of abortion early in pregnancy
-
Allow doctors to refuse to provide medically inadequate information
-
Prevent women from having to undergo unnecessary ultrasounds
-
Prohibit the imposition of a waiting period prior
-
Protect women’s rights to travel out of state (seems pretty basic, doesn’t it!)
Sign the petition: Demand Congress pass the Women's Health Protection Act now!
This bill, introduced by Senators Tammy Baldwin and Richard Blumenthal and cosponsored by 47 Senate Democrats, will restore Americans’ rights to comprehensive health care, including reproductive rights, everywhere across the country.
Thanks to the state bans already in place, currently one in three Americans is now without access to safe, legal abortion care. Hundreds of new state laws have now also been introduced to place additional restrictions on those abortions that are still allowed.
The recent case of Kate Cox in Texas showed just how far a state was willing to go to deny essential healthcare, even when the pregnancy had been determined non-viable and the mother’s health was in danger. Despite winning her case in court, state Attorney General Ken Paxton appealed to the Texas Supreme Court and threatened that any doctor that helped her would go to jail and lose their license. He threatened the hospitals with felony charges as well.
Ultimately the Texas Supreme Court overturned the lower court’s decision, just after Ms. Cox decided she needed to leave the state to obtain her medically necessary healthcare.
The case was a shocking illustration of the principle that every person deserves the freedom to make their own essential health care decisions without interference from politicians.
Call on Congress today to pass this comprehensive bill, re-establishing the right to abortion care for Americans nationwide.
Thank you for making a stand for women’s rights, which are human rights!
