The Department of Justice is suing Texas over its latest attack on human rights — and their lawyers faced off in court this past Thursday. SB 4, a bill championed by racist Texas Governor Greg Abbott, would make crossing the border punishable by jail time and would give Texas law enforcement the power to deport migrants back to Mexico.
The law is abhorrent, and will open migrants and people of color up to harassment and physical danger, while trampling on their basic human rights. But unless the judge rules against Texas, the law will go into effect in just two weeks.
We have to get loud now, and make our demands known before it’s too late. Our country should welcome immigrants and pass laws that allow us to live safely and thrive — not demonize us for cheap political points.
