And for too long, oil companies in Washington State have gotten away with polluting our waters without accountability. They are not required to ensure they have the financial resources to pay for their oil spills. Their operations put the health of our environment and our communities at great risk. It's time we do something about it. The Washington State Department of Ecology is conducting a rulemaking process that will establish financial responsibility for these companies, including refineries, pipelines, and other bulk oil handling facilities. However, Ecology’s draft rule will not come close to covering the estimated costs of a large oil spill. Action is needed to ensure that Washington businesses and communities don’t end up paying the bill for oil spills because Big Oil doesn’t have adequate coverage.
