Friend,

In 2018, House Speaker Mike Johnson said that Social Security poses an "existential threat" to the American way of life and our "whole form of government."

Now he has a plan to gut it — and dodge political accountability before the election.

He plans to create a closed-door commission to fast-track a bill designed to gut Social Security that Congress would vote on after the 2024 election. This plan has already passed out of committee and is on a glide path to final passage in the Republican-led House.

While the corporate media is utterly falling on the job — either ignoring this right-wing plot or embracing the false frame that Social Security is unaffordable and needs to be cut — Common Dreams has offered in-depth reporting on this latest attack on Social Security for months.

Journalism funded by readers like you knows that an attack on Social Security is an attack on the common good. But our watchdog reporting can’t survive without support. Can you pitch in today to help keep our nonprofit newsroom firing on all cylinders?
