Dear John,
In the past few weeks, the effects of COVID-19 have continued to unfold,
affecting both our local neighbourhoods and the global community in a way
many have never experienced. But through this difficult time, we’ve heard
incredible stories shared by ONE supporters as you continue to support
your families and those who are vulnerable.
Still, this global challenge is going to require a global response;
viruses like COVID-19 don't pay attention to borders. International
solidarity and unity are needed to win this fight. Today, we'd like to
share some of these stories of hope with you.
Stories of Hope:
Gayle Smith, ONE CEO. We are all in this together – this crisis surrounds
everyone on the planet. It’s a moment when, I believe, our common humanity
is shining through and will prevail, a moment that gives us the
opportunity to remind ourselves and the world that turning inwards doesn’t
work, and that standing together does.
Sarah DeFlon, Nurse, Michigan. Lack of access to healthcare or education
are two of the most important challenges that we address, and two things
that we have a great capacity to change for the better. The pandemic
crisis we are facing only serves to emphasize more clearly that healthcare
is a global issue, and a universal human right. The overwhelming evidence
that vaccines not only save but improve and enhance lives in the world
around us quite simply demonstrates that we will end this global pandemic
in time, but that we also need the resources and effort ONE volunteers
provide to fight extreme poverty now more than ever.

Ibrahim Alothman, trainee surgical assistant and ONE Youth Ambassador,
Germany. I worked in an emergency room during the war in Syria. As a nurse
there, it gave me hope that even the worst crises would pass and that
people would stick together in an emergency. In crises, we humans show
more solidarity than usual, because we realize that in the end we have
more in common than divides us. That's also the reason why I am involved
as an ONE Youth Ambassador. I'm sure that together we will overcome this
crisis.
Nathalie Lemay, owner-pharmacist and ONE Parliamentary Riding Leader,
Canada. Since the announcement of the pandemic, I feel like I’m in a war
against an invisible enemy. As an owner-pharmacist, I do everything that I
can to find the balance between providing my patients with essential
medicine and the responsibility of protecting my team. As a ONE volunteer,
this pandemic proves the need to intensify the research on a vaccine and
to continue to promote vaccine access to the most vulnerable. Together, we
can win the fight against COVID-19.
Fatou Warkha Samb, Gender activist and ONE Champion, Senegal. We are
currently working on a new series of videos specifically for women,
because in these uncertain times, they are the most exposed because they
take care of the people who are sick, make up the majority of the health
care staff, and also take care of children. As part of our ongoing fight
for Gender Equality, we believe it is important to show the world the
challenges that women face and to congratulate the courage and strength
that they demonstrate daily.

Over the coming weeks ONE will be making changes to how we campaign in
order to address this global crisis. Some of our campaigns will be put on
pause, others will take a different approach. Whatever happens, we will
let you know and greatly value and appreciate your support, feedback and
solidarity.
Take care,
Brett Jacobson, ONE.org
