To prevent cruelty to animals, we promote enacting and enforcing good public policies. To enact good laws, we must elect good lawmakers, and that’s why we remind voters which candidates care about our issues and which ones don’t. If you’d like to unsubscribe, click here.

Dear John,

The next installment in the Claudia Miller Ignites Series on Animal Welfare focuses on America’s dirty little secret of horse slaughter for human consumption. Specifically, we’ll be addressing the export of thousands of healthy American horses to be butchered for meat in Mexico and then sent to foreign diners in Asia.

Please join us on Thursday, March 7, at 8 p.m. ET for Horse Slaughter: Ending America’s Secret Shame. Registration information is below.

If we are going to put a stop to the century-long era of slaughtering American horses for foreign consumers, we need your help.

The one-hour webinar will highlight the clandestine, shameful industry that exports thousands of American horses across the border into Canada and Mexico. Journeys of thousands of miles. No breaks from the confinement of jam-packed transport trucks. Deprived of food and water along the way and forced to stand on urine- and feces-covered floors.

One key solution? The SAFE Act. It would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption both within the United States and abroad, specifically targeting live exports to our North American neighbors to the south and to the north. This legislation is a response to the alarming findings of a national investigation conducted by the Center for a Humane Economy, which sheds light on the inhumane practices associated with the horse slaughter industry.

We are so close, so please join us to help us finish the job.

This webinar will educate you on:

  • We are getting closer to winning. The horse slaughter industry has witnessed a significant decline over the years, with the number of American horses slaughtered annually dropping by more than 90% since 1990 and 75% since 2010. But let’s be clear: trafficking of horses for slaughter must all end. For us, it’s not a “win” until the number of horses butchered for foreign commerce is ZERO.
  • The inhumane practices of kill buyers and transporters. We will highlight the gross mistreatment of horses destined for slaughter. Animals experience neglect and suffering throughout the process, from transport to holding pens and slaughter plants. Injured horses are left untreated, and unsanitary conditions lead to the spread of contagious diseases.
  • The impact of food safety concerns. The decline in foreign markets' import of horse meat is partly attributed to concerns about drug residues in the carcasses of horses from the United States. Foreign markets have scaled back imports due to these risks, further questioning the necessity of horse slaughter and helping make the case that the entire industry needs to end.
