Armed Gangs Invade Gros Morne
"Last week saw days of violent protests in Haiti. Thousands took to the streets across the country to demand that de facto Prime Minister Ariel Henry step down, as required by law on February 7.
"On February 7 armed gangs invaded the town of Gros Morne, the center of Quixote Center's work for many years. The invaders were heavily armed and shooting. Our partners report that there were injuries but no deaths. The community's central market shut down and people fled to their homes, where they remain this week. Schools are closed and the market remains closed; with the closure people do not have a source of food or cash. The main road north out of town is also blocked.
"So far the gangs have not returned after their initial incursion, but the entire community is on edge, hoping for the best but remaining inside. The pervasive fear and lack of mobility makes it difficult for our partners to sustain the crucial agricultural and economic development work."

Tell Congress to End Illegal Arms Trafficking from the US to Haiti
Weapons trafficked from the United States are a major factor in the violence in Haiti, where criminal gangs control of 80% of the capital and kidnappings are widespread. There is also a crisis of governance, with no elected national officials, and the current de facto prime minister holds power without legitimacy. The large number of weapons and ammunition from the U.S. in Haiti has turned this power vacuum into a crisis.
Join us in calling on your Representatives to support the ARMAS Act, which would take comprehensive measures to prevent arms from falling into the hands of gangs in Haiti, helping put an end to the extreme violence and insecurity in Haiti.

DED for Palestinians
This week the Biden administration granted undocumented Palestinians new protections, as DHS designated Palestine for Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) Status ([link removed]). Similar to Temporary Protected Status (TPS), under DED Palestinians can remain in the U.S. for at least the next 18 months without fear of deportation, and can apply for work permits.
While we applaud this decision to safeguard Palestinians in the US, we urge the Biden Administration to take action for an immediate ceasefire.
