Killer whales are found in every ocean across the globe. From the frigid waters of the Arctic to the tropical Gulf of Mexico, these iconic apex predators thrive in diverse marine environments. But in the Salish Sea between Washington and British Columbia, fewer than 75 Southern Resident killer whales remain.
To help this endangered population recover, conservationists first need crucial information about their health. How do you do a checkup on a species that lives underwater and swims up to 35 miles per hour? In a groundbreaking collaborative effort with our partners, teams are using specially designed drones to collect breath droplets—exhaled in a cloud‐like plume from the blowhole when the whales surface.
These samples provide critical insights to devise conservation plans for endangered killer whales—and your support makes it possible! With allies like you by our side, we’re innovating for wildlife through our Oceans Conservation Hub so that all who share our seas can thrive.

TURNING THE TIDES
|
Across the Arctic, polar bears rely on vast expanses of sea ice to hunt, traverse the landscape, and raise their young. Sadly, their ecosystem is melting underfoot from human-driven climate change. Leveraging innovative technology, collaborative partnerships, and cutting-edge efforts from the San Diego Zoo, we’re exploring new conservation solutions for this iconic species.

BY LAND OR BY SEA
|
African penguins and California least terns live in oceans at opposite corners of the world, but both are endangered—and the threats they face are similar. Conservationists are using what they’ve learned saving local terns to help threatened seabirds across the globe through our Oceans Conservation Hub.

CELEBRATING ASIA
|
As our collaborative efforts for wildlife span Earth’s largest continent, we have evolved our conservation strategies to reflect our expansive work across its mountains, wetlands, forests, and vibrant landscapes, renaming it our Asia Conservation Hub.
Join us this weekend to celebrate Lunar New Year and Wild Weekend: Asia at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, February 17–18. Discover fun activities for all the whole family, hear inspiring stories of the conservation work you make possible, and take home good wishes for a prosperous Year of the Dragon.
