Legislative Update
Reading Reset
In the first week of February, I attended the Ed Allies Legislative Preview Forum, where I stood up for school resource officers and emphasized the importance of fixing the faulty law that resulted in them being unable to do their jobs effectively to keep our students and teachers safe.
Along with Representative Natalie Zeleznikar and Senator Carla Nelson, I also attended the Rural Childcare Crisis meeting, where we heard from providers about their concerns surrounding childcare across Minnesota.
I've been working on this issue for a long time, and I look forward to partnering with providers to make the process of starting and maintaining a childcare business a workable one so we can grow provider numbers and make sure families have access to affordable, high-quality care for their children.
This week, I dropped my Reading Reset fix bill and a capital investment bill to fix Blooming Prairie's Hwy 218.
Childcare
I also met with two MNDOT representatives, where I advocated for projects including Blooming Prairie Hwy 218, new bridges in Austin over next 3 years, and voiced concerns about speed limits in Rose Creek on Hwy 56.
As the only Republican member on both the education policy and public safety committees, I have been at all the school resource officer hearings this past week, and I've listened to police, teachers, students about how badly we need a fix for this law. This is a problem that Democrats created by demonizing police officers and moving too quickly on incredibly consequential legislation. I'm standing with students and police, and asking the DFL to do their job and fix this.
MNDOT
We agree with making sure kids are safe, there are already standards and training and in the DFL bill there's an unelected authority that would put another layer of confusion on top of what we already have
As always during the legislative session, you can watch my Mueller Minute on Facebook [ [link removed] ]. This week's Mueller Minute goes through many of the bills I've signed on to as well as an overview of the SRO issue.
Finally, today Austin is at state for high kick and jazz dance for the first time in school history! Congratulations to all of our Austin dancers and I wish you all the best!
